I Watch Films: The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell Of Fear
The Naked Gun 2 ½: The Smell Of Fear
Lieutenant Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen), Police Squad, is being honoured at the White House, causing his usual chaos. At the dinner President George W Bush announces that his energy policy will be made by Dr Mannheimer (Richard Griffiths). The representatives of the oil, coal and nuclear industries appear nervous.
Later that night a bomb goes off at Dr Mannheimer’s offices. Coming to investigate Drebin encounters his ex-, Jane (Pricsilla Presley) now working for Mannheimer. He also encounters her boyfriend Quentin Hapsburg (Robert Goulet) CEO of Hexagon Oil.
Hapsburg has a Mannheimer impersonator, actor Earl Hacker (also Richard Griffiths). He and the energy executives kidnap Mannheimer to replace him. Meanwhile Police Squad track down a man Jane saw at the bombing, but Drebin loses control of a police tank, and he gets away, Drebin also releasing animals from the zoo. They are ordered off the case.
They rescue Mannheimer but have to smuggle him into the dinner where the announcement will be made; this goes farcically but eventually they succeed. However Hapsburg won’t go quietly and kidnaps Jane and sets a bomb.
It’s a comedy! As in The Naked Gun, Drebin misunderstands, breaks things, insults people childishly, parodies other crime films and generally makes a mess. The jokes are quickfire, if you don’t like this bit of wordplay, here comes some slapstick, here’s a background gag, here’s a funny costume.
Watch This: Police comedy with some extremely fun bits
Don’t Watch This: Very silly
