Carl Sanders comes out into rural Tennessee to train Sam in selling vacuum cleaners. Sam works in the mines but he hopes for more for his daughter Bet, maybe to be a teacher or a nurse. Bet on the other hand has her own dreams, to run her own business. Sam and Carl know there are limits though to a girl like her, they understand the world.
