Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom
After the events of Aquaman, Arthur Curry is king of the undersea science fiction city of Atlantis, married to Mera and they have a son Arthur Junior. Being king of Atlantis is not easy; thereās a council who keep blocking him, and thereās the other undersea kingdoms which he has some sort of overlordship. He wants to reveal Atlantis to the surface world; they donāt.
Meanwhile Black Manta, whose father Aquaman killed, is searching for Atlantean artefacts to get his revenge. He finds a black trident under Antarctica, which possesses him, promising that he can destroy Aquaman and Atlantis. This leads him to a big hammerhead shark style submarine, from which he raids to seize orichalcum fuel.
Using orichalcum as a fuel is bad; greenhouse gas, temperature rising, ocean acidification. To try and find Black Manta Aquaman breaks his brother Orm out of prison (Orm allied with Black Manta to try and usurp the throne of Atlantis in the last film). This prison is in the ancient Atlantean Kingdom of the Sahara; without water Orm is powerless. Aquaman gets him out.
They then travel through a variety of outlandish underwater places to go to a tropical island where Blank Manta has his base; they fight various creatures altered by the orichalcum. It turns out the black trident was the weapon of King Kordax, king of Necrus and brother of legendary King Atlan, founder of Atlantis. He needs the blood of Atlan to escape from his lost kingdom; they realise that Arthur junior has been kidnapped and go after him for a spectacular action finale.
It's more Aquaman, weird complex sets, energetic action, underwater hijinks, turning from sincerity to comedy to drama to a big fight. At the end they promise a change, and in fact there will be one. But the DC comics universe is being rebooted so all this is just what it is; brightly coloured superhero action.
