The Taking of Pelham One Two Three

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three

The 70s version, not (one of) the re-make(s).

A thriller set in the New York subway. Perhaps the best part of the film is actually the one that made it up to date and fascinating at the time – the technology and structures to make the subway run. The film is happy to go to places and people (the Mayor, the counting room for the money etc) and then leave them when they drop out of the story. The two continuing lines followed are the hijackers down in the subway and the New York Transit Police Lieutenant who picks up the case.

It’s intense at times, occasionally violent, has a couple of good jokes. It’s a very straight story, with the fact there is no way to escape highlighted in order to reveal the twist, which is hardly surprising. This is a famous 70s thriller (re-made twice) that later films have taken as a starting point and put their own ideas on top of.

Watch This: For a cool 70s thriller
Don’t Watch This: If a lot of 70s clichés don’t so it for you; for example see the list of hostages in the front car.
