I Read Stories: Deriving Life

Deriving Life by Elizabeth Bear

It’s a science fiction story about an intelligent species that lived within Neanderthals and then when some defrost infect modern humans. They (Tenants) are able to communicate and so negotiate for new hosts. There are advantages and disadvantages.

Our narrator’s partner is a host and is now dying, and so, inevitably, is their tenant (who previously saved their life).

There’s obviously some analogies here, but in the end the story leaves them behind, becoming more powerfully and weirder itself, not looking to make an easy statement. I don’t know if I get it but I got something from it.
