I Watch Films: Quatermass And The Pit

Quatermass and the Pit

The original Quatermass series were filmed live by the BBC. Later they were made into films, though there was a big gap and a complete re-casting between the first two and this one. It is a really good low-key science fiction film, one that verges on horror.

Some of the special effects don’t stand up.

Dr Quatermass is having his experimental rocket group turned over to the military when the colonel gets a call about an unexploded bomb in the Hobb’s Lane tube station works. They go to look at it and it’s very weird. As events carry on there’s madness and deaths and secret history and aliens.

The authorities do not accept Quatermass’s interpretation and this inevitably leads to disaster. There’s a lot of good actors doing slightly understated roles. And they even manage to get a couple of women into the plot!

Watch This: For some quality old school British Science Fiction
Don’t Watch This: If you prefer a lot of really good visual effects to illustrate your ideas.
