I Watch Films: A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place

Don’t think too hard about this*. There are monsters that can hear, and will kill you if they hear you. There’s a family who have survived this, in part because they have a deaf daughter. They lost a child, and are now expecting another.

They all blame themselves for the child who died. They’re all willing to sacrifice themselves to stop it happening again. There are ways of unwittingly making sound everywhere and one day they will be unlucky.

There’s a very scary and oddly specific sequence about drowning in a grain elevator that I can’t help but think someone has carried around for a while.

Watch This: For a cool, stylised horror film with excellent sound design
Don’t Watch This: Unless you want to spend a lot of time reading subtitles of sign language.

* It’s not that I don’t believe the monsters could destroy civilisation, I just don’t believe they could do it without humans burning down the world. And I don’t believe in the silence of, say farmland or woods. Anyway, the monsters are very specific and the film works because of it. We just have to roll with it.
