I Read Books: Spell Bound

Spell Bound

I’m not quite sure how this ended up in my To Read pile. I’d read the first 4 Kelley Armstrong Otherworld contemporary urban fantasy novels, then drifted away for no good reason. Now this, the 12th is here in my hands. Very mysterious.

We begin in media res, Savannah Levine witch-investigator has just completed a case which ended with a lot of collateral damage. She wishes that she put things right, even going so far as to give up her magic to do so.

Her magic stops working and various victims find themselves in a better position.

As well as trying to figure this out, Levine is also targeted by witch-hunters (a myth according to the council, a body that sorts out disputes between various otherworld factions such as werewolves, witches, sorcerers, vampires and half-demons) and an otherworld cult that believes they should reveal themselves to the world.

As might be expected she gets kidnapped a couple of times, used as bait, breaks out, there are double-triple crosses, plans, plots and weirdness ([SPOILERS] as noted this is number 12 of the main series, and number 13, titled 13, was the last so this is both set up for the final volume as well as its own plot). Levine even manages time for a bit of romance, making some adult decisions about her relationships with the large cast of supporting characters.

Read This: If you have been following the series, or, apparently, if it has randomly appeared in your to read pile.
Don’t Read This: If you want a standalone novel or you want something other than a competent romance-tinged urban fantasy.
