I Read Stories: Gretel by Nancy O'Toole

Gretel
by Nancy O’Toole

A retelling of the Hansel and Gretel fairytale, but in modern day America and most of the fairy-ness ground off. Which of course leaves all the rough edges. We know from the start what the shape of the story is, but we also know there will be differences. And the nature of them, with the death and threat of the wild deep woods and those who live there gives the story breath and life.

Read This: For a dark retold fairytale
Don’t Read This: Parental death, child abandonment, kidnapping, threat of eating etc
The Picture: Is Mary Berry's gingerbread house, which does not deserve this treatment
