I Read Books: The War Of The Flowers

The War Of The Flowers

Theo Vilmos is a failing musician and then his life fall apart; his girlfriend has a miscarriage and leaves him, his Mum dies. Then while going through her belongings he tracks down a book by his great-uncle who was a world traveller in the early part of the 20th century, and then the book goes on to detail his time in a magical city of new Erewhon.

Meanwhile in an adjacent dimension there’s plotting amongst the Flower Lords who control fairyland. The city keeps suffering from Blackouts of magic, which they call science. Multiple people have plans to use the mortal realm to deal with their problems. And more than one of those revolves around Theo, who will soon have a spirit that steals bodies after him and his only escape is into the fairy realm.

Read This: For a fantasy novel that flirts with having traditional fairies projected into an industrialisation of fairyland, along with revolution and music
Don’t Read This:
If you want it to do more than flirt with those ideas rather than a grim political thriller with magic and dragons
