I Watch Films: The Warriors

The Warriors

Cyrus, the leader of the biggest gang in New York, has summoned representatives of the most important gangs in the city to the Bronx to have a meeting. Amongst them are The Warriors, a Coney Island gang (these are opposite sides of New York City, which is important though the exact geography may not be). At the meeting Cyrus makes a speech saying that if the gangs stopped fighting each other and instead fought “the man” they could run the city.

The leader of The Rogues, another gang, shoots Cyrus and lays the blame on The Warriors, requiring them to travel across New York back home, running, fighting, hiding, riding trains and often getting distracted by women. They encounter variously themed and garishly dressed gangs, and even occasionally normal people, suggesting that possibly Cyrus and the film are wrong concentrating on gangs, the city is just the city. What exactly these gangs do other than fight each other and get arrested by the police is never explored.

Watch This: A simple, direct and violently entertaining film
Don’t Watch This: It’s a bunch of weirdly dressed thugs causing trouble
