I Watch Films: And The Walls Come Tumbling Down
And The Walls Come Tumbling Down
Hammer House Of Mystery And Suspense
On a building site in London for the military, a deconsecrated church is finally scheduled to be demolished. However one of the workmen is strangled by a hose that comes alive. A police inspector and a female journalist both come to investigate. It turns out that the journalist is a paranormal investigator loosely associated with the Department of the Environment.
A young man is strangely drawn to the church. He used to live here, and is back for a visit. He has odd visions. Meanwhile the investigation finds some things out. It seems that the church was the centre of a satanic cult. One of the cultists betrayed them, several were burned and they swore revenge on him and his descendants. Also a mysterious painting was sealed behind a wall.
This is straightforward horror, the 17th century bits evoking old Hammer period pieces, the modern bits slightly grimy, this is London in the 80s thatās still tied down to the past. The ending gets a little silly.
