Draco Draco by Tanith Lee

An apothecary in post-Roman Britain meets a swordsman on the road. They see dragon sign. The apothecary is learned, for these fallen times. So when they get to the town and learn what theyā€™ve been doing, sacrificing to the dragon to keep it away, they know how this will end. Badly.

But the swordsman has it in his head to be a hero. Though no living man has slain a dragon with a sword. And the girl to be sacrificed is in a panic. It could all go wrong. It could all go very wrong.

But the apothecary has a cure.
