I Read Books: More Monsters

More Monsters

Full disclosure: I received my copy from the editor Steve Shaw of Black Shuck Books, a friend I have known so long that we sang a rude song about him to the tune of Crockett’s Theme while at school.

This is a collection of Paul Kane’s short stories on the theme of monsters (he has a previous collection called Monsters, hence More Monsters as the title). It’s a good mixture. There are some where the monster is the hero. There’s a very funny undead riff off the Blue Brothers (ā€˜The Bones Brothers’). There’s a deal with the devil story (ā€˜The Last Temptation of Alice Crump’) that if not totally original certainly manages an entertaining twist at the end. And there’s several monster horror stories, with one highlight being ā€˜The Bite’, possibly the nastiest in the collection, about hunger and transformation, where each reveal opens the door to worse things.

Read This: For several excellent stories about monsters
Don’t Read This: If horrid things happening to people, or horrid people in general, are not for you.
Don't Sing Rude Songs: About classmates to music you're learning in music class
