I Watch Films: Avengers Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War

10 years, 18 films, all your superheroes dumped into one movie, an invincible guy who levels up with each victory and has a (half-) universe ending plan, this is Avengers: Infinity War. Questions like is it good (close enough) and does it make sense (absolutely not) are beside the point. It’s better compared to something like a variety show, everyone comes in, does their ten minutes of greatest hits and then gets together with someone else to do a duet or group performance. Are they good? Some are, some aren't and all your favourites are on stage next to some guys you heard of once.

A highlight is Thor’s team-up with the Guardians of the Galaxy in which he effortlessly rolls with their nonsense and gets what he wants out of them while also impressing them.

Peter Quill : The Avengers?
Thor : The Earth's mightiest heroes.
Mantis : Like Kevin Bacon?
Thor : He may be on the team. I don't know, I haven't been there in a while.

A lowlight is discovering that Thanos, known as the Mad Titan, is so-called because he comes from the planet Titan, although this might be because Titan is a moon of Saturn so every time it’s mentioned I keep thinking of that. Thanos’ motivation is bad and his plan to deal with resource depletion on Titan was horrible and it is absolutely and completely stupid to take that awful idea and apply it universally. It does not bear thinking about. So I didn’t and although this takes the edge off his tragedy he’s still a big monster who wants to kill (half of) everybody. Villain!

Anyway, there’s several overlong fights, several characters make astonishingly brave and incredibly stupid decisions, and it ends on a downer. What more can we ask for? Other than a complete story obviously.

Sadly I think the best way to assess the success of this is to wait until the second part, Avengers: Endgame, is released and see what it’s like as a finished duology. Sorry about that. [UPDATE: Avengers: Endgame has been released and I have watched and reviewed it]

Watch This: Because you’re watching all the superhero films and this is one of them
Don’t Watch This: If you want an upbeat ending or a film that makes sense
A Prediction: Kevin Bacon will save the day, possibly in character as Sebastian Shaw from the Hellfire Club in X-Men: First Class
