I Read Stories: Suzie Q

Suzie Q, a short story by Jacquline Carey

Suzanne made it out of a hard life to the angel summoning academy. But it turns out there’s a demon inside her which comes out when someone betrays her. So she’s forced to leave, to live on the streets where the croppers and shadows wait to steal souls (also bodies).

A street kid called Son shows her places that are safe and in return she is able to use her summoning stone to protect them with angels. Though one day that won’t be enough.

As is often the case with Carey, this combines sexually explicit scenes with somewhat idiosyncratic angels. Also the rags to, well not riches exactly but certainly a place of privilege is here, though then the arc travels back down. It is visceral and clever.

Read This: For a cool, gritty, unusual fantasy story.
Don’t Read This: For something nice and calming and fluffy
