I Read Books: A Meeting At Corvallis

A Meeting At Corvallis

The war the previous books in the trilogy have been setting up is finally on. The Portland Protective Association tries to roll over all their enemies to the south. They’re disunited, but the two main protagonist factions, the Mackenzies (longbows) and the Bearkillers (armoured horsemen with bows, foot pike and crossbow, technical stuff too) are fully prepared to make a fight of it. Will the other free peoples come to their aid?

Meanwhile Rudi Mackenzie is captured during the rescue of Princess Mathilda, leading to a bit of plotting and special operations.

This brings the initial trilogy to a fitting end, with some of Stirling’s themes being made a little clearer – when technology went away myths became, if not real, closer to being so; fighting men require support, but underlying the economics are deeper moral and philosophical questions; and that your own strengths rising from your answers can also be used as a weakness.

Also reasonable people can come to an agreement even if some of them are evil.
