Anga is a concubine of the Emperor and when they are forced to flee, she raises the prince and heir, Akbar, as well as her own son. When Akbar becomes Emperor in turn she is his advisor, and her son his general. The Emperor retreats into poetry, and stargazing, and intoxicants and dancing girls. Being ruled by a woman is unpopular and her son has ambitions; she tried to rouse the Emperor with a potion that will give him the heart of a dragon.

But there are plots within plots and the court is not safe whether the Emperor is strong and attentive or weak and distracted.
