Death has a soft heart and when a dying man commends his orphaned son to Death he agrees to be his godfather. The boy grows and becomes a physician, and Death grants him a boon; if he places some of Death’s special wax by the beside of a patient, Death will appear. If he is by the head the patient will live, by the feet they will die.

He becomes a very celebrated physician, and all goes well. He never asks where the wax comes from. And then one day the baron is ill and Death is by his feet. And the godson…
