I Read Books: Angela Carter's Book Of Fairy Tales

Angela Carter’s Book Of Fairy Tales

Angela Carter edited two books of Fairy Tales from around the world for Virago, though she did not complete her notes on the second before her final illness and death. This volume is the two combined. They are often female oriented which the notes comment on, putting forward Carter's thoughts on stories, women and culture.

"Swahili storytellers believe that women are incorrigibly wicked, diabolically cunning and sexually insatiable; I hope this is true, for the sake of the women."

Some are crudely sexual, others funny, many of the non-European ones have structures and elements that are unfamiliar. Highly recommended.
