I Read Stories: Looking For Katie Showalter by Andrew Welsh-Huggins
Looking For Katie Showalter by Andrew Welsh-Huggins in Tough
Andy Hayes is a private detective in Columbus (Ohio I think, I’m not doing a lot of research on this*; it’s a large American Midwest city which is as much as we need to know). He gets a case; Katie Showalter has gone missing. She’s a drug addict who ran away after she relapsed and last texted from Columbus.
Hayes works his way through the homeless encampments and parks and comes across clues. A church that takes up young women in trouble, apparently to help them. But the founder has done jail time for fraud and they won’t admit anything. Hayes will have to get to the bottom of this.
Read This: For a classic private detective story updated
with 21st century crimes
Don’t Read This: It gets gritty and dark and also just a tiny
bit weird
* In revising this review it became clear it is indeed Columbus Ohio, so the illustration is a picture of Goodale Park, one of the locations in the story
