I Read Books: Warrior

Warrior

It’s 1828 and Mathew Hervey is still back in England on leave from the Cape Colony to get married again. Though it’s not as satisfactory as he hoped has at least regularised his position. (Or not, complications with a former amour occur).

It looks like he will finally get his promotion to lieutenant-colonel, but not in his beloved 6th Light Dragoons. Instead it will be with a perfectly respectable infantry regiment in Canada. Before that he’ll be sent to see the war in Turkey and before that, to finish out his detachment to South Africa where the mounted rifles he raised are needed on the Eastern Frontier.

Shaka has forged the Zulu kingdom out there and the governor, a friend of Hervey’s, intends to lead a diplomatic mission. But there is illness and betrayal in the air and they will have to draw sabres before it’s done.

Read This: For a fictional adventure set in the last days of Shaka’s reign
Don’t Read This: The insertion of British characters, and two thirds of the book being their concerns, would unecessarily spoil the historical adventure
