Magnificent Maurice, Or The Flowers Of Immortality by Rati Mehrota in Lightspeed Magazine

Maurice is a cat. He lives with a witch at the bottom of the universal tree, that holds together spacetime, upholds the laws of physics and also has flowers of immortality.

Both the witch and Maurice guard the tree. There are other younger cats, but Maurice is not yet ready to let them try and guard. And now someone has broken through to the tree to take a flower and disaster may overwhelm them all.
