I Read Books: Pushing Ice
Pushing Ice
The Rockhopper, captain Bella Lind, is a cometary mining spaceship in the late 21st century. Then Janus, a moon of Saturn starts to accelerate. The Rockhopper is sent after it to try and find out what’s going on. The engineer Svetlana Barseghian, a long time friend of Lind, thinks something is wrong and tries to turn the ship around.
There is mutiny and counter-mutiny, and the Rockhopper gets caught with Janus, heading for an artefact in the star system of Spica. They will end up a long way from home, with every mystery unravelled opening up more; when they meet aliens there are as many secrets as answers.
Reynolds moves us from crisis to crisis, skipping years during which they calmly get on with surviving, only for old problems and crimes to rear their heads again, just as something new and weird turns up.
Read This: An exciting science fiction novel that moves from
medium-future space exploration and survival to weird far-future alien stuff
Don’t Read This: If one more absolutely bonkers idea after
another is not for you
