I Watch Films: Fast And Furious Present Hobbs And Shaw

Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw

Two antagonist-turned-allies* from the Fast and Furious films get their own spin off. If you want two shaven headed men fighting, driving and insulting each other then this is quite the treat.

Disgraced secret agent and criminal mercenary for hire (probably) Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham)’s sister Hattie (Vanessa Kirby) is framed for stealing a deadly virus (by injecting herself with it) by Brigstow (Idris Elba), a cyborg previously murdered by Deckard Shaw. So she becomes a disgraced secret agent. I think their brother was as well, so maybe it’s a family tradition? I’m not doing as much research for this review as I should, sorry about that. Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson), mostly-un-disgraced secret agent, is brought in because deadly virus and he’s “worked” with Shaw before. Neither of them like it but inevitably are forced to team up.

Remember when this series started it was about a gang of thieves stealing combined TV-DVD players from a moving truck?

Still, in one way it does remember what it is; Fast and Furious is about family and both Hobbs and Shaw do some reconciling with their families.

Anyway, the macho posing is played for laughs, this has a slightly lighter touch than the mainline Fast and Furious films, a couple of fun cameos, and this film cares more about the ending of Game of Thrones than anyone else in the world at this point.

Watch This: For driving, exploding, fighting action, also some knob jokes
Don’t Watch This: If shaven headed men growling insults at each other is never funny.
* A recurring feature of the series
