I Read Books: An Unkindness Of Ravens
An Unkindness of Ravens
This is a non-fiction book on collective nouns and not one of the other books with this title.
This book on collective nouns in general goes back to late
medieval sources, asking the questions; why is a group of crows called a
murder, a flock of geese a gaggle? Along the way one learns a little of the
mindset and lifestyle of the people of the 15th and 16th
centuries and even some of the later antiquarians who popularised the better
known ones.
Read This: For some interesting discussion of the history of
a cloud of gnats or a rout of wolves
Don’t Read This: If you want some actual history, though the
list of sources, especially the primary sources, might be of use
