Linda loves the lions in the zoo, in her lion costume, by the glass. Our narrator loves the lions too, though mostly Anya who scares children by pouncing at them. Anya ought to be pregnant, she’s fertile, been brought in as part of a breeding rotation. Our narrator sympathises.
Then Anya becomes pregnant, but there’s something odd. It goes on longer, from the summer, past Christmas. Our narrator misses her birthday with her parents because she has to be there. Her parents are worried about something.
The cub will be born. Just the one. And our narrator will be there to look after it.
