The Augur And The Girl Left At His Door by Greta Hayer in Beneath Ceaseless Skies

The Augur was wrong once. He read the Emperor’s back and predicted success in war. The war was a disaster and the Augur was banished to this remote village.

The Augur reads a bridegroom’s back. He sees the child there, and what will follow. He tells the truth. He always tells the truth. He tells him he will have a daughter, then go to the city to seek his fortune. He does not tell the whole truth.

When the girl is left on the doorstep he sees she will have questions and brings her up. She reads his book of Augury and he burns it. It is better that she not know. But she keeps one page, on collarbones and what that means for love. And one day she brings home a suitor.

The Augur can see his fate written on his body.
