Aliens came and stole the moon. What more is there to say?

Well we don’t know for sure it was aliens. We didn’t get a good look at what was going on. One day there was unexplained activity on the moon, strange structures popping up like mushrooms, the next it was on its way.

Of course we tried to find out what was happening, maybe even stop it. But what could we do? The first probe launched was planned in a hurry. It turns out that the celestial navigation software had some unwarranted assumptions built in. When the gravitational gradients around the earth alter so massively in so short a period of time and keep changing, rockets go off course.

By the time there was a fly-by we were more interested in trying to deal with the fallout of tides sloshing about unexpectedly and the variety of earthquakes as geological faults reset themselves. They didn’t show anything that made any sense, just a network of hemi-spherical structures. No exhaust, no trail. Some neutrinos from a power source that have scientists very excited, it will revolutionise our understanding of particle physics.

Maybe they can use that knowledge to put a lamp in the night sky and make it less lonely.

Whoever took the moon – we’re still tracking it, it’s accelerating but at a very moderate rate, you’d think they could hold it together against the forces – whoever took it did leave one thing behind. In its former orbit a hundred-sided object, a carved block of iron. On each face a different language. Each one saying the same thing.
