I Watch Films: Carnival Of Souls

Carnival Of Souls

Mary is in a car with two other women that are challenged to a race by some young men; they go off the bridge and Mary is the only survivor. She’s trained as an organist – there is a factory in town that builds organs – and leaves for Utah to take up a job as a church organist. On her way she spots an abandoned pavilion by a salt lake, which had been a bathing spa, a dancehall and a carnival.

There’s a creepy guy in her building who basically stalks her, meanwhile there's some weirdness where she can’t hear people and they can’t see her. She also sees a strange man from her dreams.

Things get weirder and creepier, at one point the minister fires her for playing sacrilegious unholy music which I guess is true; it’s a tune from a horror movie after all.

Watch This: A horror film that manages to be creepy in several directions at once, even if the ending is telegraphed, with some good organ soundtrack
Don’t Watch This: Scary clowns and dancers are not for you
