I Watch Films: Godzilla Vs Kong

Godzilla Vs Kong

Godzilla became king of the monsters in Godzilla King Of The Monsters. Kong is still on Skull Island, which has been domed over by MONARCH, the secret monster organisation, to stop Godzilla from coming to fight Kong. There’s a hidden power source in the Hollow Earth, but going into the Hollow Earth is too dangerous due to reverse gravity and they have no guide. Godzilla is attacking some institutions owned by the company Apex, and a conspiracy podcaster has a theory why. The daughter from the Godzilla King Of The Monsters film has some thoughts on all this. There’s a small deaf child, the last Skull Island native, who Kong likes, and is adopted by a MONARCH expert. Apex has hired a Hollow Earth professor and they have machines that will probably survive going into the Hollow Earth.

There’s some secrets, conspiracies and betrayals, and none of that makes any particular sense.

What it does do is set up some fights. If I say it’s “meet-fight-team-up” like an old comic book superhero crossover does that give too much away? Because I think that’s the obvious, and slightly cowardly, solution to putting the two cool monsters in the same film. Are the fights any good? Yes, and the first one is a pretty high concept one at sea, a very interesting setpiece that manages to sneak in a tiny bit of character development. Competent film making!

Watch This: Some monster fights, that’s mostly the reason to be honest
Don’t Watch This: If you want any actual thoughts on conspiracies, because the most paranoid people are played for laughs or relegated to a teen adventure b-plot while the credulous hollow earth and monster guys are dupes and the film has nothing to say about this
