I Watch Films: The New Mutants
The New Mutants
Dani Moonstar survives a disaster and wakes up to find herself in some sort of clinic for new mutants with four other teenagers and a doctor. It’s a dangling stand-alone spin-off film of the X-Men series.
Obviously things get spooky and weird. Dani’s fairly sure she killed her father and everyone on the reservation where she lived. The others have their own problems and offer varying levels of sympathy.
Anyway it’s a half-hearted haunted house superhero-horror or
it’s a minor superhero origin side-story. There’s a couple of fun scenes and
some good performances but the set-up makes it pretty clear what’s going on so
not a lot of mystery and the tension didn’t work because it’s a sort-of X-Men
film so the resolution is about accepting and controlling your powers in a spectacular extended action sequence.
Watch This: It’s a slightly scary superhero film
Don’t Watch This: Kids hang about not learning anything
until they mess up
