Highlander III: The Final Dimension
In Highlander Connor Macleod discovers he is an immortal, and that there can be only one immortal in the end, and eventually he cuts off the head of the last immortal (apparently this is the only way to kill an immortal). Then he goes through the Quickening, a lightning spectacular that occurs when an immortal kills an other immortal.
Highlander II, set (mostly) in 2024 complicated this in ways that I won’t explain because Highlander III neatly sidesteps the problem by setting the film earlier. There was also a TV show at the time and I don’t know how that fits in.
Anyway Connor Macleod travels to 1600s Japan and meets an immortal with The Power Of Illusion and also swordsmithing skills. Unfortunately Kane, an evil immortal (he burns down a village in his first appearance) and his two sidekicks arrive and kill him, stealing the Power Of Illusion. However this causes them to be buried in the cave and Connor Macleod escapes.
In the 20th century an archaeologist (who closely resembles a woman Connor loved in the 18th century) finds a site in Japan, the legendary cave of a sorcerer. Kane escapes, sends one of his henchmen to find the Highlander (a 400 year old trail, nice) and kills the other, triggering lightning effects. Connor was living in Marrakesh with an adopted son, sees the lightning and returns to New York (the site of The Gathering, the (not quite) final show down of the immortals in Highlander). The film then proceeds pretty much as you’d expect, perhaps with slightly more swordsmithing.
Anyway let’s be clear, the film makes no sense, the villain is aggressively evil, some of the effects have not aged well, most of the fights are good. I enjoyed watching it.
Watch This: For some swordfighting, Power Of Illusion, timecrossed romance action
Don’t Watch This: If you want a film that makes some sense
