I Read Books: Luck In The Shadows

Luck In The Shadows

Lynn Flewelling’s debut, a fantasy about spying and thievery. Alec, stuck in a northern jailcell, is rescued by Seregil and brought south to Skala. Seregil is the Rhiminee Cat, the noble’s favourite thief for hire. This, of course, is a cover for being a Watcher for Nysander the royal magician.

Training for Alec, and a loosely expanding cast of characters, as well as the magic and culture of Skala are all introduced. Meanwhile skulduggery and plotting also take place, as the Plenimarians, who have necromancers rather than wizards, prepare for war.

This is fun and stylish, occasionally showing the seams where Flewelling is really interested in putting something into the novel. It has occasional flashes of brilliance in the use of oracles, and also some annoyances, keeping secrets for the sequel.
