I Watch Films: The Company Of Wolves
The Company Of Wolves
Rosaleen has dreams based loosely around tales of werewolves and red riding hood. In her dream she lives in a village in the wood in, loosely, the nineteenth century. Her sister Alice is hunted and killed by wolves. Rosaleen goes to stay with her grandmother (Angela Lansbury) who gives her a red shawl, some stories and some advice*.
Rosaleen walks out with a boy, and the villagers hunt wolves. A noble huntsman, whose eyebrows meet in the middle courts Rosaleen. She desires him but knows that this will end badly. Wolves are savage, but also free.
Watch This: A superb exploration of growing up and
blossoming and fairy tales and the danger of the woods
Don’t Watch This: Wolves are friends, in fact you can tell
they’re having a good time in the film, it’s the soundtrack that makes them
scary
Inspired: In part by stories from Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber
* Never stray from the path, never eat a windfall apple and never trust a man whose eyebrows meet in the middle
