I Read Stories: The Devil And Dice by Diana Hulbert
The Devil And Dice by Diana Hulbert in Luna Station Quarterly
Dice and Orca are sisters, twins. Pastor Papa declared one to be a holy thing and the other an evil one, and though he declined to state which was which, the sisters thought they knew.
Following Papa Pastor’s revival roadshow is a carnival that Papa Pastor rails against in his sermons, and takes a cut of the proceeds. One day Dice takes the foal of one of the limey horses kept for fights. Dice keeps the horse in their kiddy pool, and feeds it meat (that’s what the limerunner horses eat). She tries a trick, a high dive riding the horse, and disappears.
Orca knows she’s the bad twin and knows that Dice is with the Devil. Which is all kinds of wrong. So she knows what she has to do.
