I Read Stories: The Language Birds Speak by Rebecca Campbell

The Language Birds Speak
by Rebecca Campbell in Clarkesworld

Grace has had trouble speaking all her life, and her son Alex seems to have the same problem. Or not problem, rather she can say things but not in any recognised language. When she says them – when Alex says them – things happen.

There’s a program to help with speech therapy, but they want DNA and full histories of the parents and it’s all quite invasive and strange. And when Grace’s husband doesn’t want to offer up his DNA, they suggest that, perhaps, it might be possible to acquire it anyway. Which isn’t a very ethical thing for a medical team to suggest.

But Grace needs help. And she may get some answers.
