In the town of Linden some girls have to marry the hollows men, out in the fen. This is known, and if they don’t bad things happen. There is a ceremony on St Agnes Eve where they find out, performed by the witch.

The witch dies, and her daughter comes to live with Laurie’s family. And Laurie’s friend Ellie doesn’t want to marry a hollows man, and will learn scrying and making effigys if she has to.
