I Watch Films: The Endless

The Endless

Ten years ago brothers Justin and Aaron fled a UFO death cult. Now they work as cleaners and live off ramen. When a farewell-in-case-of-space-rapture video from one of the cultists comes through the post they remember the good food, the companionship and decide to visit.

The cult operates by brewing beer (this is a thing, cults and communes often fund themselves with cheap labour and high quality products made by motivated workers). Everyone is okay with them visiting, or might be. But it’s weird up there, there are two moons and a third appears, strange reflective images, and up in the hills live other people who have different ideas as to what’s going on and what the entity is.

Time and escape and being trapped and moving on. Gorgeously shot with sparing special effects, and the odd spectacular one. The moment where, after welcoming them back, the (not-leader) cultist finally loses his temper and reveals the lies (it may be a UFO cult but not every story the elder brother told the press when they escaped was true). All excellent.

Watch This: A creepy clever film about family, cults and weird time
Don’t Watch This: You want to know what’s actually going on
