There was a war out in space. Aliens had attacked Earth and then took Old Beijing with them. The inhabitants and defenders found themselves captured.

But in the Garden the “cruelly beautiful, lovely and sadistic colony/capital/prison” of the Reaver Prince they met allies, the Torches, who have truth in their words and never lie, and whose fire burns with their souls. And Jon and the narrator of the story were inseparable, bound together in their war as they made their way through the gate network.

Until one day they separated. And now they meet again, in Jon’s home in suburban California.
