I Watch TV: Trickster
Trickster
Jared is 17 and at school in rural British Colombia. He’s also indigenous and a drug dealer, and his Mum hears voices and his Dad has a new and younger wife who is pregnant.
Then it turns out Wade is back in town, and he has magic powers. He's an old friend of his Dad, and his Mum, and is actually Jared's father, though I don't think the original Dad ever learns that. Also there are creatures who wear the skins of people, his Mum is a witch, so is his estranged Grandma. And his Mum killed Wade 17 years ago when Jared was born.
Also there’s a new girl at the foster home across the road, she’s very militant about the new oil and gas pipeline (so is his Grandma which is why it’s a pity they don’t get to meet) and every time she has different hair.
Jared may be about to turn into a raven and someone is going to die.
Anyway this was a cool Canadian indigenous TV show. Sometimes it felt as though it was shoving a lot of stuff in there that didn’t quite pay off (the friend who is a gamer, the bully at school, the drug dealing, Tasty Bucket diner all added to the atmosphere and setting but didn’t seem to contribute to the story especially). But on the other hand by putting all of the 21st century and classic teen and other bits in it did ground it in a time and place and sometimes that’s all you can ask for.
