The City Of The Tree by Marie Brennan

The city of Cahuei is dominated by an extraordinary cypress tree, but now the tree is dying and this will be a disaster. Once there was an archon, a summoned magical creature who preserved the tree in his sleep, but he’s gone now, in part because the city was conquered and the conquerors kept all knowledge of archai and magic to themselves. But the city is free now and so they need to do something with their half-remembered rituals to save the tree and the city.
