I Watch Films: Tomb Raider (2018)

Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider gets rebooted using some of the ideas from the reboot of the game series. Lara Croft is now young, trying to find her Dad, off on her first adventure, and up against Himiko, a legendary Japanese Queen who was exiled into the sea.

The best action scenes sort of recreate the excitement of the game, though those were over-shadowed by the fact that you got to see the gruesome deaths when you failed. More than that; Lara is genuinely unsure of herself, having to grow into being and action hero in the game. Her first kill is tough on her and drives this home to the player, though this is slightly undercut by later sequences where one guns down dozens of bad guys. In this film she has a firm grip on her action hero status, as a bike messenger she takes on all comers, and she’s willing to chase and fight thieves in Hong Kong from the start.

Watch This: For a good looking woman trying to find her Dad and having a ridiculous pulp archaeology adventure
Don’t Watch This: If you want more than a ridiculous pulp adventure
