Locke Lamora is a con-artist and thief in Camorr, a moderately high fantasy Italian renaissance flavoured city-state. To the Right People, the criminals, he and his gang the Gentleman Bastards are modestly successful burglars. Secretly he is the Thorn of Camorr, who breaks the Secret Peace between the criminals and the nobility, extracting tens of thousands of crowns from them in elaborate cons.
One day the Grey King, a rival ganglord, involves him in his machinations, while they are in the middle of another con. With a combination of magic and blackmail he forces him to perform a con on the city’s crime boss.
Then things start to get complicated.
