I Read Books: Night's Sorceries

Night’s Sorceries

Tanith Lee returns to her world of the Flat Earth, in a final volume consisting of several loosely related stories revolving around the many-named protagonist of Delirium’s Mistress, Ahriaz, daughter of Azhran, Night’s Master, Prince of Demons..

These are dreamy fairytales, with something of an Arabian Nights flavour, and the one about a trip to the moon (and then on to the sun inside the moon) feels very like a whimsical early twentieth century translation of a minor Roman comic myth. As well as weaving in and out of the lives and loves of the daughter of Azhran, Lee does have a message of sorts for us, which reveals itself well before she explicitly says it on the last page.

Read This: For some clever, and weird fairytales even if you haven’t read the others
Don’t Read This: If you prefer serious and sensible stories and not to have morals even if they’re a bit convoluted
