I Watch Films: Deadpool 2

Deadpool 2

Deadpool is still funny, violent and irreverent. The fourth wall breaking – talking to the audience – is a bit more noticeable. Deadpool (the character) is aware not only of the X-Men movies that he’s in but the whole superhero genre. (As he says to Cable, “You’re so dark. Are you sure you’re not from the DC universe?*”)

Also Cable, grim 90s** cyborg anti-hero comes from the future to kill a mutant who will kill his wife and child. In the future. The film takes Cable seriously, which I guess it has to as otherwise it’s just Deadpool messing about. Deadpool himself does not take Cable very seriously, and this tension is why the film is more interesting than just ultra-violence and dick jokes.

Probably the highlight is the formation of X-Force followed almost immediately by the team falling apart. Absolutely first rate that they throw away an actual X-Mutant character with a comics following as a joke.

Watch This: Because dismemberment can be funny
Don’t Watch This: Because dismemberment isn’t actually funny

* Brolin, the actor, played Jonah Hex in Jonah Hex
