A Hat Full Of Sky
After the events of The Wee Free Men, Tiffany Aching is going up to the mountains to learn to be a witch. There she’s apprenticed to Miss Level, a witch who is one woman with two bodies. Witching is mostly making sure that sick people get nursing, poor people get fed and old people on their own get a hot dinner and some company. Tiffany is a bit unhappy about this, hoping for more magic and mythic (“miffick”) events. Meeting other young witches doesn’t help a lot, because they have a leader, Annagramma who spends all her time putting people down.
But Tiffany has accidently attracted the attention of a hiver, a creature that possesses people. The new Kilda (queen) of the Nac Mac Feegle back home has refused to let any of them follow her, feeling insecure due to Tiffany briefly standing in as Kilda when the last one died.
Tiffany has learned how to step outside herself to take a look and this gives the Hiver it’s chance. The terrible thing is that the Hiver uses not just her body, but her mind as well, hurting and taking without restraint. There will be a final confrontation at the Witch Trials, with Granny Weatherwax stepping in with her own ruthless brand of compassion.
