I Watch Films: The Vampire Lovers

The Vampire Lovers

A hammer horror film based very closely on Sheridan LeFanu’s Carmilla (see Lust For A Vampire for another take on the character). In brief: Carmilla (Mircalla, Marcilla) Karnstein travels through 19th century Austria and her mother keeps placing her with families with daughters. Carmilla gets close to them, they naively not understanding exactly how they’re falling in love, also she’s a vampire so the daughters fall ill and die.

There’s a fair amount of boobs and bums, women kissing etc. More interesting is the way that everyone misunderstands what’s going on, including Carmilla who seems to be genuinely affectionate and also reckless, as though the natural result of being a lesbian is your partner wasting away.

The men eventually compare notes and decide they can’t put up with this deviancy, also the murder, and the film becomes an old-fashioned period vampire hunt.

Watch This: For a Hammer vampire film that gets sexy
Don’t Watch This: Carmilla’s unnatural love must be punished
