Metal Like Blood In The Dark by T Kingfisher
An old man creates two big machines, Brother and Sister, who are able to rebuild themselves. The planet is old and short of rare and necessary elements. The old man finds he’s dying so calls for help, but has the machines leave and hide (Brother likes to fly, Sister to mine).
His reason for doing this is that the machines are useful, and he never got around to teaching them about evil and dishonesty so they could easily be taken advantage of. Of course while hiding off planet they stumble on evil and dishonesty and have to decide how to deal with it.
