I Read Books: Stone Of Farewell

Stone Of Farewell

At the end of The Dragonbone Chair all our heroes scattered throughout Osten Ard, the known world. Simon managed to get hold of the sword Memory, possibly killing a dragon in the process, but maybe not. He and his companions are in the land of the trolls, where two of them are under sentence of death. Josua, second son of the former king, is on the run from his brother Elias’s forces after they destroyed his stronghold. The daughter of Elias is on a quest to get her family in the powerful duchy of Nabban to rebel against her father, but she’s too late and there’s a lot of intrigue and murder.

Simon ends up in the realm of the elves, Josua and his companions amongst the plains nomads of the Thrivings. Both of them and others are given a mysterious rendezvous, the Stone Of Farewell, where the two elf factions split many centuries ago.

There’s a certain amount of wandering about lost in this one. Not that the first one didn’t have that either! Anyway, the point is that everytime someone tries to achieve something, an unexpected obstacle appears in the way. This is true for the bad guys too, and although I say unexpected, they’re usually coming out of the chaos of war, famine, weird religious events and odd magic spreading across the land.

Read This: Although it moves slowly the story never lacks for incident and interesting places
Don’t Read This: The second in a trilogy is always a hard sell.
